L'hôte (Your host)
Calum has built a successful contracting career in the field of communications with some of the world’s leading organisations. These include the Financial Services Authority, the Royal Bank of Scotland, Tesco, Barclays Bank, the British Airports Authority, the giant American outsourcing organisation Electronic Data Systems and the Electricity Supply Board in Dublin
Musically speaking only, Calum has been on the fiddle for years. Born in Renfrew and brought up in Aberdeen, he started playing the violin and piano aged 7 and even had a bash at learning the bagpipes for a few years.
Orchestras that Calum has played in have accompanied the legendary and incomparable Dame Janet Baker at the revered Haddo House in Aberdeenshire, Britain’s favourite soprano Lesley Garrett at Doncaster’s racecourse(!) and Hollywood superstar Howard Keel at the Royal Albert Hall.
A member of the orchestra at the International Gilbert and Sullivan festival since its inception in Buxton in 1994, Calum has also played in Philadelphia, Majorca, Budapest, Waterford and the London Palladium.
Living in Yorkshire for more than a decade afforded the opportunity to play the complete cannon of Gilbert and Sullivan works and pretty much every musical ever put on by an amateur operatic society. That musical journey encompassed everywhere from Harrogate to Huddersfield and from Brigadoon to Camelot.
A relative newcomer to chamber music, Calum is looking forward to hearing and becoming more familiar with the repertoire of Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert and the like whilst being at work and, perhaps, where numbers permit, putting in the (not too) odd violin part.
